Kitchen & Cooking Essentials

Over this weekend, I was speaking to a friend who is remodeling her kitchen as part of her "New Year Resolutions". She wants the perfect kitchen for cooking and entertaining. After wishing her well with the remodel, I told her that I didn't think her old kitchen was so bad. That sparked a conversation about "kitchen and cooking essentials".

The kitchen is certainly one of, if not the most, used room in the house. I own a small two bedroom condo north of Grand Rapids. My kitchen opens out onto the dining and living room with a large counter top that is really good for entertaining. Even when I try to focus the party somewhere else in the condo, the center of action shortly becomes the counter and kitchen area.

However, there are many things my kitchen doesn't have. I don't have a microwave, a power blender, a toaster oven, and lots of other gadgets. I do have a food processor which I've used once. So far. Despite my lack of kitchen items, no one has complained about meals at my place. (Perhaps they are just too polite?). My doing without some of the above items has more to do with my commitment to simplicity, minimalism, and slow living, than it does to my finding them useless.

For me, the essentials are very few. I feel I have all I need with a good set of knives, some good cookware, the right ingredients, and space to entertain. Some people need more and that's fine. And I will remind you, if you are looking for some really good knives and cookware, check out iCook, I couldn't be happier with my iCook stuff, and its going to last a lifetime.

Tell me what you think is essential to have in the kitchen?

i believe that a kitchen needs ezeewrap to ensure the quality and freshness of your food. since the kitchen is the focal point of the house.

I JUST got iCook knives! I cannot believe how much easier food prep is when you have a great set of knives. I think the 14-minute instruction DVD which is included with the set should be available online as well as for purchase separately for a nominal fee.

The instruction video is GREAT for promotional purposes.

Jason Roberts is knowledgeable AND entertaining. And you can tell he really loves cooking. I am not in the same ballpark, but his enthusiasm for food and cooking has inspired me.

Tonight I was making some garlic bread, and mincing the garlic took one-fourth the time as my old cheap knives, because the knife was so sharp and because the structure of the iCook knives allow me to have better control.

It made me realize that I don't need a bunch of gadgets if my basic tools (like knives) are top-notch.
