Cities with the best Food

Over the weekend I had an opportunity to speak with a friend who had just returned from a trip to Europe. He went into extensive detail about how good the food was in various cities. This prompted a wider discussion about how food varies from place to place and what cities had the best food, and so on.

I've been blessed by being able to travel. I spent years in Europe and many years on the road for a couple of jobs. So, I have been able to eat in many places and enjoy a wide range of food. My favorites? I think its hard to have a bad meal in most Italian cities. And Portugal was a culinary surprise with fantastic food. The specialty was sea food, but done in ways I hadn't experienced before, many red sauces, etc.  In the U.S., New Orleans is superb for its dining pleasures and New York, my home town, has some incredible restaurants. And allow me to throw in a plug for my current home-town, Grand Rapids. For a medium sized city, we have some amazing restaurants.

What are some places where you have had a fantastic meal? Do any cities stand out for you as having provided outstanding dining experiences again and again? Let me know, I'm interested in hearing what you have to say.
