Halloween Brownies

Here's a recipe I came across recently for spooky brownies that be used for Halloween.

6 ounces dark chocolate
1.5 sticks of unsalted butter
2 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup all purpose flour
Pinch of salt
Orange sanding sugar, or orange sprinkles, or orange food coloring mixed into vanilla frosting

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. You may also want to line the bottom with parchment paper.

Melt the chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl.

Beat the eggs with the granulated sugar, using a mixer on medium for about 2 minutes. Then beat in the chocolate and butter mix, vanilla extract, and salt.

Bake for about 15 minutes or until done to taste. Then coat with frosting or sanding sugar. If you are going to use sprinkles, then moisten the top with a little warm butter to help them stick.

I'm posting this on behalf of my 10-year-old nephew, Dominic, who is attending the Young Chefs Academy in Mill Creek, WA. Last night I had the privilege of transporting Dominic to the Academy's Halloween party. Their plan was to make Oreo Cookie Caramel Apples which would be enjoyed during a showing of Disney's "Haunted Mansion."

When we picked Dominic up he gave us this 'review' of the caramel apples: apparently they had delayed too long after dipping the apples in caramel and before rolling in the Oreos. The chef/instructor quickly adapted the recipe by adding a layer of white chocolate so they could get the Oreos to stick.

Dominic could not stop raving about how much he liked the addition of the white chocolate. As a matter of fact, on his recipe card review form he marked "could  not get enough" as his opinion of this Halloween treat!
