Special Diets

One more thought inspired by our recent conversations and posts about vegetarian dining -- special diets. I am sure we all know people who due to food allergies or health concerns, religious and philosophical commitments, or personal preference, adopt a special diet.

For example, my nephew, Jonathan has Celiacs disease. His diet has to be wheat and gluten free. His sister, Ashleigh, is diabetic, so, limited sugar for her. My sister is a real champ managing the dietary needs for both. In fact, she's been so health-inspired, she's gone back to college for a nursing degree.

I know other people who follow a Kosher regime, some who are vegans, and even some who will eat only locally grown and produced food. There's even the Slow Food movement, dedicated to preserving regional cuisine and food traditions, environmental protection, and taking the time to truly enjoy the preparation, eating, and sharing of food. (Check out the Slow Food movement if you aren't familiar).

Do you follow a special diet? Do you know someone who does? How do you deal with challenges of cooking, shopping, eating-out, and entertaining?

My husband and I are on Weight Watchers (maintenance, though, so we get a generous daily allowance). Additionally, my son and I are diabetic. Planning is at the heart of our specialized diets. In addition, we have found that fast food is almost impossible to work in. We enjoy eating out, but limit ourselves to once a week. We have cut almost all potato and rice products out of our diet, which helps on both the WW and diabetic front. French fries were quite a sacrifice at first, but now they honestly seem so greasy and salty as to be repulsive.

Entertaining is easy. We have a selection of diet-friendly choices that everyone seems to enjoy. When we go to someone's home, we usually take a dish or two that we can all enjoy but that we know the nutritional information on.

He this brings up a great opportunity. I follow a wheat/gluten free diet and I have to say it is a REAL challenge sometimes. I also am allergic to milk, eggs & cheese. I also stay away from lots of sugar. So what do I eat you ask? I eat lots of free range chicken, free range fish, nuts, berries, sweet potatoes and salads. As much organic as possible. The opportunity is to get the word out to Amway/Quixtar. There are millions of us who still would love a protein bar or meal replacement bar from Nutrilite. I have emailed product suggestion several times but I think I am the only one. Is anybody else wishing we carried these products?

I have placed a couple of comments on the opportunity zone before, not neccesarily at this particular section.

As I did not receive any response, I decided not to interact at all. However, reading Janet's comment on Special Dietes encouraged me to insist on the question I have. There are many food and beberage items offered by hundreds of web-sites including Quixtar. The commun promise made to the potential customer is the high quality of the product and its great health benefits for the consumer. My wife and I rely on Quixtar for that matter, but still we don't know how risk-free are the ingrdients in our products.

Is any real risk for IBOs and their customers who are eating bars and drinking XS energy drinks due to the content of "sucralose" or other sweeteners?

What's the danger for the children who are enjoying these bars and drinks?

The "Simply" products taste great. What about the quantity of sugar?

I have e-mailed Quixtar several times asking if certain products are Gluten-free. In most cases, they replied back asking me to read the ingredients on the product. If I could figure it out by reading the ingredients, why would I have e-mailed them? Duh !!

They always brag on having good scientists/ nutritionists/ research team on their staff. And in spite of all that they don't have a list of Gluten-free products !!

EDITORS NOTE: Sorry that you have had difficulty getting such a list. Not being the Health editor on being on a team involving our edibles, I cannot tell you off the top of my head what products have gluten and which don't. With that said, I will ask if we can have such a list posted to our website or made available. Thanks for your comment! GG
