Labor Day, Mom, and the Kitchen

My Mom came for a visit this past holiday weekend. And since many of my friend's love my mom, I hosted a dinner party for six on Saturday night. The menu included tabuli salad made with cilantro instead of parsley, and then Cod poached in miso and lemon, served over sautéed onions, peppers, and kale. I thought it all turned out well and there were no complaints from the guests.

For the sauté part, I tried out my new iCook 12 inch fry pan. Great stuff. The pan was the only one big enough to get all the kale into. The non-stick version is safe, easy to cook with, and even better -- easy to clean.

With my mother's visit came a flood of memories in the kitchen. I learned all my cooking basics from mom, watching her in the kitchen as a kid. And I asked lots of questions too. But my mother has tons of patience, and answered each one, thus teaching me how to cook in the process. This time around she helped me cut vegetables and reminded me to wash everything, twice, about every three minutes.

Friday night I didn't cook at all. Rather, I took my mother to Cygnus, a great restaurant at the top of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. The entire restaurant has been redone and looks sharp. And the menu was good too!

I hope your holiday weekend was good. Anyone have have any fantastic food moments from the weekend to share?
