Sea Food

As you know, I grew up in NYC. And many people forget that NYC is a coastal city. Growing up, our family ate more sea food than any other sort of food. There were several fresh fish markets close by. Every weekend my family dined on crab, bluefish, flounder, fluke, mackerel, shrimp, and mussels and clams.

As kids we loved the stuff, no matter how awful it looked. Let's face it, squid may be tasty but it ain't pretty. For some reason, my brother, sister, and I never refused anything that came out of the water.....of course, I gagged on mashed potatoes until I was 12 and despaired every time my mother made meatloaf...so there were foods we didn't like, but sea food wasn't one of them.

My father cooked most of the fish and sea food. Not sure why, but he became adept at all things ocean. He perfected red crab sauce, and his mussels and garlic are still fantastic, I have him make it every time I go home.

In addition to the health benefits, fish is pretty easy to make. I have some sort of white fish (Cod, Pollack, etc). at least once a week. I take the fish, some veggies, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and butter and put in an alumnium foil pouch. I bake it at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. It turns out well each time and its easy to clean up.

So, is your family menu composed mostly of meat and potatoes, or do items from our oceans and lakes make it to your plate once in a while?

My mom grew up in NYC, in the Village on Bleecker St. But I don't think she grew up eating the same seafood as you. She married a military guy and I grew up eating Mrs. Paul's fish sticks every Friday (Catholic abstinence).

Now, as an adult, I live in the Pacific NW and seafood is a more popular dish at restaurants than any other meat or poultry. My husband makes a great salmon on the grill, wrapped in foil with a bit of white wine and fresh rosemary from the garden. I also love crab, shrimp, lobster, halibut, sole, etc. Unfortunately, I have never acquired a tasted for shellfish like clams, oysters, mussels, or geoducs which are popular here. (This I believe is the fault of too many years of fish sticks.)

Care to share the red crab sauce recipe??! As native West Michiganders, summer would mark the time we began our fish diet - salmon and lake trout were our favorites. As avid boaters, nothing tasted better than something we caught ourselves!

I was born to a couple of Dutch immigrants so I grew up with mostly meat and potatoes. My mom actually grew up in Indonesia, which was a colony of the Netherlands, so she did make Nasi Goreng and other Indonesian dishes to augment the potatoes and kale dish (boer kole ... sp?) and the carrots and potatoes mash (stamp pot ... sp?) typically served with sausage. I HATED liver, which she made on a regular basis (and typically overcooked til it was tough as leather). She didn't do fish that often, but I liked it.

It wasn't until I was older that I began to eat fish more frequently, and now I order seafood the majority of times I visit restaurants because my wife does not prepare it that often at home. I love almost all things from the sea, particularly when prepared correctly.
