Food Ruts

Ever get caught in a food rut? You know, times when you can't think of anything different to make for dinner and when it seems that you eat the same thing, all the time?

Lately, in my house, the food rut is chicken. I buy frozen bagged chicken breasts and use them in various recipes. I love chicken, it's good for you, and reasonably priced. But now it's getting old. And after reading a coworker's blog, BeautyTipsy, (see her post from Friday, August 10) I imagine that some people are relieved that I am growing bored with chicken for dinner.

Shrimp is one of my alternatives. But it can be expensive. I like beef, but it can be a chore to prepare and carries health concerns when eaten in excess. So, I've been experimenting with vegetarian dishes and fish.

Have you been in a food rut before? How did you get out of it? Send me your comments. In the meantime, I'm looking for ways to avoid hearing "Chicken? Again?"

I recommend the "Saving Dinner" series by Leanne Ely, especially the low-carb version. Each book in the series gives an entire year's worth of easy to prepare dinners. Each week has a chicken, beef, turkey, seafood, pork and vegetarian meal. I prefer the low-carb book because it only gives the main course. I like to have steamed veggies on the side for dietary reasons (my husband and I lost a total of 120 pounds on Weight Watchers a few years ago, and have found that we still need the structure of being "on the plan"), so I don't need recipes for other side dishes.

I was really in a rut and found myself preparing the same four or five meals in heavy rotation. Not so since getting "Saving Dinner." Also, we eat out a lot less often because most of the meals are so easy to prepare. There is also a monthly shopping list if you are going through the recipes in order, but I tend to just pick and choose through them.
